Man charged with friend’s murder

ALEX - 22-year-old suspect allegedly assaulted a man who used to be his neighbour when they lived in an Eastern Cape village.

An Alex resident, accused of murder, was remanded in custody by the Alex Magistrates’ Court pending further investigation.

The 22-year-old suspect allegedly assaulted a man who used to be his neighbour when they lived in an Eastern Cape village.

The victim later died at the Alex Clinic as a result of serious head injuries.

The incident occurred on 28 October at 9.30pm at the old council premises near the court. The suspect, who lives on 9th Avenue, found his brother and the deceased drinking at his brother’s shack and joined them.

After a while, he went to buy food which they all shared. They started arguing and the deceased apparently slapped him in the face, provoking a fight. The accused claimed that the deceased slipped and fell head first, injuring his head.

A witness, who went to the scene after she heard screams, saw the deceased lying on the ground, bleeding from the injuries on the back of the head while onlookers were watching.

After failing to get transport, she ran to the clinic to try and get an ambulance, without success. When she returned to the scene, some residents helped her to take the injured victim to the clinic, where he died later.
