Wear a red ribbon to commemorate World Aids Day

NATIONAL – Citizens are urged to show their support for people living with HIV/Aids by wearing a red ribbon.

Each Friday in December is when South Africans can stand in solidarity with those who have HIV/Aids.

Citizens are urged to participate in Red Ribbon Friday activities across the country ahead of World Aids Day on 1 December.

In a statement, the Cabinet of South Africa said that wearing a red ribbon, which citizens can buy anywhere, or make their own, is a symbol of solidarity and commitment towards the fight against the illness.

“This is an opportunity for every community to unite in the fight against HIV, show support for people living with HIV and remember those who have passed on,” the statement read.

This year’s theme, ‘My right to know my status. Prevention is my responsibility’, links to the global theme, ‘The right to health’.

“This bolsters the implementation of South Africa’s national strategic plan for HIV, tuberculosis and sexually transmitted illnesses from 2017 to 2022, which is a key pillar in South Africa’s progress towards achieving universal healthcare as reflected in the National Development Plan, which promotes a healthier, stronger and more equitable nation.”
