Faulty electricity connection claims the lives of two children in Alex

ALEXANDRA – Two children electrocuted to death.

Two children died on 23 November after being electrocuted by an electricity box which was not properly connected.

Thabani Mthetho, who first saw the deceased, explained that he was going to his residence when he saw them lying on the ground and called for help.

“When I approached them, the youngest had turned green, with foam coming out of her mouth. The eldest was kicking and showed signs of recovery,” Mthetho said.

According to witnesses, the two young girls (three and six) were playing near the electricity box on 8th Avenue as they usually do with their friends when the ordeal happened.

A neighbour was asked to transport the children to a nearby clinic where they died.

“Every day, a group of children play on an unused mattress that is close to the box,” said resident Lebogang Leso.

“City Power came to fix this box after problems occurred with electricity and left it exposed with a cable going through the yard.”

According to another resident, Joseph Ngobeni, the electricity box exploded last week.

Residents are expected to hold a meeting to discuss what should be done about the electricity box on 24 November.
