Alex Peace Builders aims to ward off xenophobia

ALEXANDRA – Alex Peace Builders wants to promote peaceful co-existence between cultural, tribal, social, national and foreign national groups.

Peacebuilding efforts in Alex should be intensified at all costs to ward off the resurgence of xenophobic attacks and the exclusion of others from the gains of democracy.

This was said by Lucia Poko of non-profit organisation, Alex Peace Builders which promotes peaceful co-existence between cultural, tribal, social, national and foreign national groups in the township. The organisation’s aim is to also improve the current tenuous relationship between hostel dwellers and residents, put a stop to incessant crime and violence between interest groups such as taxi associations, and curb sexual offences, particularly rape.

Poko said these problems arose due to the lack of programmes promoting social cohesion. “People are preoccupied with their individual and group endeavors at the expense of peaceful co-existence, essential for the safety and security among neighbours,” Poko added.

“Without peace and feelings of indebtedness to one another, and neighbourhood safety, crime will thrive, property will be destroyed and lives will be lost when residents don’t assist a neighbour in distress.”

She said Alex’s many stakeholders should be coordinating their efforts to ensure social cohesion which was essential for peace, development and progress in the area. “The Community Police Forum, East Africa Community Givers’ Association, councillors, schools, government departments and the police should meet often to build bridges to prevent any xenophobic flare ups and robberies directed at defenceless foreign shop owners who provide essential services to the community.

“It will also be a platform to exchange good business practices, encourage foreign nationals to learn local languages to improve communication with residents, to discourage rumours that they slept on the food in their shops and relieve themselves inside their shops, and encourage them to report robberies.”

Poko urged for regular marches by residents and stakeholders as a preventative strategy against xenophobia and for door to door anti-crime campaigns.
