Do not litter!

Berea – About 15 people participated in the cleaning campaign and more people are encouraged to support it.

As part of the monthly A Re Sebetseng cleaning campaign in Joburg, DA leaders took their programme to Berea Park on 29 October.

About 15 party members, including Joburg caucus leader, Jack Bloom, participated in the campaign.

This event, according to Joshua Appel, DA proportional representative councillor in Berea, was part of the City of Joburg Mayor Herman Mashaba’s initiative.

Appel said their efforts were earmarked to give residents of Berea a park to be proud of adding that the park seriously needed to be cleaned because it was full of litter.

“We want to demonstrate to the residents that they need to keep their environment clean,” said Appel.

“Through our efforts, the park was spotless after we had finished with our event. Residents observed us cleaning the park and hopefully it made them more aware of the need to dispose of litter in the correct manner.

“We hope that this has impacted positively on our residents, and furthermore, we hope that this has made the public aware of the need to keep public spaces clean,” he expressed.

Appel added that it’s also made him, as a PR councillor, to see the need for greater enforcement of bylaws in the parks and open spaces.

He claims that as part of the A Re Sebetseng initiative they will hold monthly events in various places in Yeoville and Berea but indicated that they will need more participation from the residents.

“Without them, our efforts will amount to nothing. Residents don’t need to bring anything but can only expect to get dirty. Without their support, we cannot keep our city clean. The public needs to take pride in their city.”
