Year-end function for second-chance matrics

ALEXANDRA – Ort SA hosted a year-end function for their second-chance matrics.

Mathematics and physical sciences second-chance matrics of Ort SA, an organisation that helps young people improve their marks post-matric, in Alexandra were treated to a day of motivation and encouragement.

The matrics were treated to a lunch at St Michael’s Anglican church in Alex ahead of their final exams.

Two teachers, employed by Ort SA, Silas Fenyane and Tsholofelo Sebotha were confident that the class of 2017 would produce good results at the end of the year.

“The students have shown commitment and were motivated throughout the year, so I am confident that a lot of them will acquire good marks,” Fenyane said.

“Most students who got really low marks when they came in, now acquire between 50 and 60 per cent in their prelims.”

Sebotha said, “Last year, we had a 95 per cent pass rate, so I want this year’s class to beat the previous one.

“We made sure from the first day they stepped into the classroom that they would be prepared for their finals. They wrote tests every week to see where their weaknesses lie and we would help them improve on those areas they struggled in.”

Marcelle Ravid, marketing communications manager for Ort SA said the organisation was proud of this programme which had been running for the past three years.

“Eighty per cent of students who have been through the programme have either gone to universities or have gotten work,” Ravid said.

The programme takes in candidates who passed their matric exams the previous year but did not do well and would like to improve their marks.

Nhlamulo Chauke, one of the candidates at the organisation said the year has gone better than she had expected.

“I thought it was going to be hectic and stressful, but the teachers were really helpful,” she said.

She achieved 83 per cent for maths and 72 per cent for physical sciences in her preliminary exams and is hoping to get in the 90s for both subjects in her final exams.
