ALEXANDRA – Police investigate a murder and three attempted murders.

Alex police are investigating a murder and three attempted murder cases, which occurred during the week ending 15 October.

Police spokesperson Captain Allie Kodisang said the murder occurred at midnight on 11 October on 4th Avenue.

The police officers who were summoned to Alexandra Clinic found the body lying on a stretcher with a bullet wound in the rib cage. The deceased was identified by a co-worker of a Shisa Nyama outlet as Alcido Zunguze.

Kodisang said the first attempted murder occurred at 11am on 10 October at an engineering company in Wynberg. The victim, who was the company’s driver, was shot in the stomach and taken to Sunninghill Hospital for treatment.

He and an armed escort were driving a company vehicle when they recognised a man who once tried to hijack them near Alex Plaza. The suspect surrendered when the escort pointed a gun at him. They placed him in the back of the vehicle without handcuffing him and took him to their company offices. When the suspect stepped out of the vehicle, he grabbed the gun from the escort and fired two shots, one of which hit the victim. The suspect escaped with the gun.

The second incident occurred at about 7pm on 11 October in 4th Avenue. Police in a patrol vehicle made a U-turn towards a parked Audi, registered as stolen in Sandton. When the two occupants noticed the police, the driver tried to reverse in order to pull off but he failed to get away. One of the suspects shot at the police and continued doing so while he escaped. The police returned fire and wounded his accomplice and the driver, who was trapped in the vehicle and eventually died. The officers weren’t injured. A pistol with filed off serial numbers and an empty magazine was found in the vehicle which was taken to the police pound.

The third attempted murder occurred at midnight on 15 October in Far East Bank. The victim was walking from a tavern on Phil Ziqubu Street when he was approached by three suspects who accused him of being proud. They assaulted and hit him on the head with empty beer bottles. One of them took the victim’s licensed gun and fired four shots at him but missed while he was grappling with the other two suspects. They left the scene with his gun while he was bleeding profusely from injuries sustained to his head and face.
