The accused’s case was first heard by the Alex Magistrates’ Court on 5 and 10 May.

He was denied bail and the case was referred to the High Court after he admitted to murdering a lover in his room at his workplace. The two had met at a Sandton casino and went to his place where he paid her R600 after they slept together. Afterwards, they went out but parted ways following a quarrel when she accused him of paying her only R400. Later, the victim followed him to his place and asked for and was given food.

Tebyane claimed that they quarrelled again after she allegedly demanded an extra R1 000 for endangering her health after a condom had torn during their sexual encounter. He admitted to hitting her on the head repeatedly with a hammer until she was motionless on his bed. He claimed to have slept on the floor for two days while her body lay on the bed.

On the third day, the body started to smell and he dumped it into a bin which he pushed to a rubbish collection point. On the fourth day, when the bin was still not emptied, he poured petrol into the bin and set it alight but was seen by neighbours, leading to his arrest.
