Cleanliness is next to Godliness

Joburg – In an effort to clean the City, government has allocated R2.4 billion to Pikitup for the 2017/18 financial year

Residents in the Joburg east suburbs heeded the call from the City of Joburg Mayor Herman Mashaba and helped to clean their neighbourhoods last weekend.

On 30 September, the City held its first successful city-wide A Re Sebetseng voluntary clean-up campaign led by the mayor himself.

Residents of Orange Grove cleaned a substation on the corner of 6th Avenue and 10th Street.

Residents cleaned Orange Grove, Linden and Alexandra among other suburbs in the Joburg east region as part of A re Sebetseng (let’s work).

In the North Eastern Tribune area, Ward 81 councillor Irene Rugheimer said they cleaned the corner of Grenville and Dublin road.

“We collected 20 bags of rubbish and found dead rats, babies nappies etc,” said Rugheimer.

“Even though the A re Sebetseng campaign applies to the last Saturday of [every] month, I am however appealing to our residents to clean up [in the area] where they stay on a regular basis.”

In Orange Grove Ward 73 councillor Eleanor Huggett said residents cleaned a substation on the corner of 6th Avenue and 10th Street.

“We also had Victoria and Orange Grove West residents who cleaned all the streets and cleared the stormwater drains,” said Huggett.

Ward 72 councillor Steven Kruger said they will have another clean up on the end of October. He encouraged residents in his ward to come out and assist.

“We also had a clean-up in some parts of our ward last weekend and we are planning another one at the end of October. We urge residents to play their part,” said Kruger.

Mashaba said he was heartened to see so many residents coming out in their numbers to help transform Joburg into a clean City we can all be proud of.

“The clean-up was the first of many such events which the City plans to host on the last Saturday of each month,” said Mashaba.

Residents cleaned the Old Cemetery in Alexandra as part of the A re Sebetseng clean-up campaign led by City of Joburg mayor Herman Mashaba.

“The City of Joburg belongs to all who live in it and I cannot overstate the importance of each and every one of us playing our part in turning Joburg into a true city of golden opportunities.”
