Street aerobics comes to the people of Alex

ALEXANDRA — Residents of Phase 1 in Alexandra had fun at a street aerobics session.

Residents of Phase 1 in Alex had an early morning on 16 September when the City of Johannesburg held an aerobics session outside Karabo Crèche.

This was an initiative by the City of Johannesburg, the Body Boost Groom Fitness Agency and Ward 75 councillor Sannie Mavhona.

Mavhona said the objective of bringing aerobics to the community was to introduce healthy living through music.

“This encourages people to start working out in order to keep fit,” she added. “It also shows that exercising does not have to be boring.”

She said the event also promoted unity in the community. “These days, neighbours don’t know each other, but through this, they can have fun together and start forming friendships.”

Sizakele Mavuso, facilitator of the City’s sports and recreation department said she was happy with the attendance.

“If attendance carries on like this, we will have to find a venue where we will host regular sessions,” she said.

Mavuso added that the interest shown in the exercise classes had been overwhelming since it started in May.

Catherine Kekana, an instructor of the fitness agency said there was a need for them to facilitate the programme because it could not run without trained people. “Keeping fit and healthy contributes so much to your health and you wouldn’t have to go to the doctor regularly,” she said.

Kekana urged people to attend the sessions as it would introduce them to a new way of working out.

Resident Tony Motala who jogs daily, said aerobics was new to him but he fully enjoyed it.

“Exercising with music is fun because it doesn’t even feel like exercising, it feels more like dancing,” he added.

The next session will be held on 30 September and a venue still has to be decided.
