This is what you need to know about Cosatu’s protest march in Joburg CBD

Cosatu will hand over four memorandums during a march in the Joburg CBD on 27 September.

Officers from Joburg Metro police and the SA Police Service will divert traffic along the route of  Congress of South African Trade Unions’ (Cosatu) protest march in the Joburg CBD today, 27 September.

In a press statement issued on 11 September, Cosatu said, “The recently held Cosatu Central Executive Committee has resolved that the federation needs to embark on a national strike following the Section 77 Notice on State Capture and Corruption that was submitted to NEDLAC on 17th July 2017.

“What prompted this action were the revelations by the Public Protector that the current South African Administration has been captured and that there is a network of the predatory elite that is engaged in looting of state resources and corrupt activities.”

Joburg Metro police spokespersons, Wayne Minnaar and Edna Mamonyane said in a statement that the planned protest march in the city centre would start outside Cosatu House in Braamfontein. The marchers would then proceed up Rissik Street to hand over the first memorandum at Metro Centre.

Then, they will turn left into Hoofd Street, then left in Biccard Street to join Simmonds Street to hand over a second memorandum at Bank City.

The statement said a third memorandum would be handed over at the office of the Premier and a fourth memorandum will be handed to the Chamber of Mines.

“They will go up Pixley Ka Sema Street, right into Albertina Sisulu Street up to Beyers Naude Square, where the protest march will disperse,” read the statement.

Minnaar and Mamonyane advised motorists to avoid the roads mentioned between 11am and 3pm on Wednesday.

This evening, messages on social media groups alleged that taxi drivers plan to block routes on the N1, N12 and M1 tomorrow morning from 3am. This could not be confirmed by this website, but updates will follow as more information comes to light.
