Metal dealers bust

ALEXANDRA – Heavy metal traders remanded in custody.

Two Mozambican nationals arrested for alleged theft were remanded in custody by the Alex Magistrates’ Court pending their engagement of legal representation.

The 41 and 30-year-old suspects were arrested as they tried to sell metal rails allegedly stolen from a railway track in Mpumalanga. Undercover investigators were tipped about the pair on 19 June and passed on the information to the police who spotted their hired truck the following day.

The police followed the truck to a Midrand scrapyard where the culprits were arrested as they tried to sell 116 pieces of the heavy rails.

It wasn’t specified whether the truck was impounded. Its owner said the suspects only specified that they were hiring the truck for business purposes between Mozambique and South Africa.
