2 robbers sentenced

ALEXANDRA – Armed robbers of phones and wallets jailed for four years.

Two men who languished in jail for seven months pending their trial were found guilty of robbery in Alex and sentenced to four years imprisonment by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court.

A third man with an amputated leg who was with the accused just before the incident was acquitted by Magistrate Renier Boshoff, while a fourth accomplice is on the run.

The two, one with dreadlocks and the amputee, were part of a group of four with a gun. They were said to have passed two men walking along the street at midnight on 15 January. After some minutes, the victims heard people running towards them from behind. The two accused and the accomplice who is at large, held up the victims and stole three cellphones and wallets and an undisclosed amount of money before disappearing.

The victims were helped by residents to identify the home of the amputee who led them to the accused’s homes where a citizen’s arrest was effected and the accused were later handed over to the police.

The third accomplice fled the area and is still wanted for the crime.
