Children in Alexandra enjoy Mandela Day celebrations

ALEXANDRA – Make Mandela's infectious love for children a daily affair.

The infectious love for children by the late president Nelson Mandela has led to calls for communities to exhibit a similar emotional expression when engaging children in daily life.

The call is made every year on 18 July when the world celebrates his birthday through altruistic deeds which unfortunately die off immediately after.

On the day, businesses, institutions and the public in general engage in once-off, ceremonial 67 minutes of goodness through feeding, clothing and hugging of children.

To make this an act of real daily goodness for children of all social standing, communities are encouraged to start with the basic of actions such as tangible daily expression of love and protection and by being their heroes and role models.

This could extend to participating in all school meetings, supervising schoolwork, motivating children on the value of education and working through Ubuntu principles and values.

From this, a foundation could be laid for the development of truly caring and nurturing communities conscious of the importance and impact of good daily actions towards the country’s future.

A photograph of some of the children taken at a recent Mandela Day commemoration at an Alex orphanage may just be the start of this attempt.
