Armed kidnapper gets 3 years

ALEXANDRA – Kidnapper involved in shootout with police get 3 years imprisonment.

 

A man found guilty on charges of kidnapping, hijacking and illegal possession of a firearm was sentenced to 3 years imprisonment by the Alex Magistrates’ Court.

Lukhanyo Mthombeni pleaded guilty before Magistrate Renier Boshoff on 17 July. Boshoff took the recommendations of a social worker into considerations before passing the sentence.

Mthombeni was arrested on 21 January in Bramley View after a high speed chase and shootout with the police and security guards who had tracked the vehicle he and an accomplice had hijacked in Mayfair with its owner inside.

The accomplice was shot dead while Mthombeni was shot in the leg. His leg had to be amputated forcing a delay in the trial.

The vehicle was recovered and the shaken victim was not hurt. The R50 000 he had with him was also recovered, as well as the firearm used by the accused.
