MUST READ: Metro cops allegedly laugh when confronted for parking in disabled bay

JOBURG – Photos of the Metro police vehicle have been shared on social media since it was first posted on 8 July.

A photo of a Metro police vehicle parked in a disabled parking spot at a petrol station on Malibongwe Drive has been circulating on social media.

The photos, posted by Bridget van Oerle on 8 July even saw a reaction from the City of Johannesburg’s MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Development, Nico de Jager.

De Jager commented, “Stupidity is not a disability … my colleague will deal with them,” possibly referring to Public Safety MMC, Michael Sun.

Van Oerle said when she confronted the two female officers, they laughed. “When I said it was illegal and I would report them, they rudely said they know it’s private property so they can do what they like, these are people who are supposed to uphold law.”

Metro police spokesperson, Wayne Minnaar, said officers may not deliberately park their vehicle in a disabled parking bay. They can park there only of it is in the execution of their duty, he said.

“There will be an investigation and due disciplinary processes will follow.”

If you spot a Metro police officer parked in a disabled parking bay, you can report it by sending an email to the director of internal affairs, Sam Sethagu, at samse@joburg.org.za or call the corruption and wrongdoing 24-hour toll-free hotline on 0800 203 712.

Van Oerle later commented that she believes residents need to be good civil servants and report issues. “Officials should know we are watching.”
