GP Thick Divas in the thick of fight against cold winters

ALEXANDRA - A group of women calling themselves the Thick Divas donate clothes to Alex charities.

Less fortunate members of the community are no longer sitting back and waiting for a Good Samaritan to come from out of space and descend with aid relief.

This was further amplified by an organisation of ‘heavy weight ladies’ who call themselves the GP Thick Divas who took the responsibility on their own shoulders and are doing it for the less fortunate within their midst.

Led by Nomvula Mabaso from Alex, the group of divas decided to adopt Banakekeleni Children’s Home and the Alex Hospice and Rehabilitation Centre as their preferred institutions of charity work.

Another member of the group is Tina Tshabalala, a former Caxton Local Newspapers employee in the Greater Joburg North branch.

The Thick Divas, who consider themselves as a group of plus size women, landed at the two institutions with bags full of warm clothes which they donated to the children of Banakekeleni.

Other bags with warm clothing items that fit the elderly were delivered to the hospice, which looks after frail and vulnerable older citizens.

Mabaso said they wanted to help children and elderly to fend off the biting cold with these warm clothing items.

The Thick Divas were taken on a tour of both institutions and were also introduced to the residents and the selfless work being done by the founders of the two institutions, Grace Marutlulle of the hospice and Rose Kubayi of the children’s home.

“We left both institutions with wishlists and we’re planning on coming back on a much more regular programme,” Mabaso concluded.
