Alex police investigate attempted murder allegations

ALEXANDRA – Patrolling officer shot and three residents evade death in a week.

 

Alex police are investigating four allegations of attempted murder including one which involved a police officer during the week ending 18 June.

Police spokesperson Captain Allie Kodisang said the first incident occurred on 12 June at 9.39am. Two police officers were patrolling the area in a vehicle in 1st Avenue when they saw a man in the middle of the street who was allegedly holding a gun. When they approached him, the suspect allegedly pointed the gun at them. As they stopped to get out of the vehicle to take cover, the suspect allegedly fired shots at them which hit the officer who was driving in the right shoulder. Backup support was called but the suspect disappeared in the crowd. The injured officer was rushed to hospital for emergency treatment.

The second incident occurred at 5.30pm on 15 June. Police were called to the Pan Africa Mall taxi rank where they found a man with head wounds lying in a pool of blood on the ground. Next to him was a broken knife. The rank manager told the police that a group of taxi drivers allegedly assaulted the man who lives in the Nobuhle hostel. This happened after he allegedly stabbed one driver who was involved in a dispute with another over passengers.

The third incident involved a shooting incident in 10th Avenue at 9pm on 17 June. A motorist was arrested at the police station when he reported an alleged hijacking. He alleged that he shot at a group of men with his licensed gun as they pulled him out of his bakkie and assaulted him. He then ran to the police station to report the incident. However, when the police went to the scene witnesses informed them that the motorist had allegedly shot and injured a man with whom he had an argument. This was confirmed by the injured man at the clinic resulting in the motorist’s arrest. His gun was confiscated.

On the same day another man allegedly stabbed his younger brother at their home in Extension 7. The older brother apparently demanded his brother’s cell phone. When his brother declined any knowledge of it, he allegedly drew a knife and stabbed him in the chin, neck and throat. The injured brother ran away with his brother in pursuit but he failed to catch up withhim. The injured brother was taken to the Alex Clinic for treatment by his mother.
