Councillor’s Corner: What can I claim back from the City?

JOBURG – Read this weeks' question in Councillor's Corner answered by David Potter, Ward 102 councillor, and Dalu Cele, Ward 101 councillor.

JOBURG – This week, Roxy de Villiers from Westdene asked:

What, if any, can residents claim back from the municipality due to damage caused by potholes, power outages and so forth?

David Potter, Ward 102 councillor, answered:

Residents of the City of Johannesburg who suffer loss may submit an insurance claim to the relevant City of Johannesburg department or entity (for example, City Power, Joburg Roads Agency or Joburg Water) responsible for the damage. It is important to note that the finalisation and possible payout of the claim would be at the insurer’s discretion. Claim forms are available from the various entities, either by contacting the entities telephonically or by visiting their website. The legal department of the relevant City of Johannesburg department or entity should be contacted for further information in this regard.

Dalu Cele, Ward 101 councillor, added:

In terms of power outages, residents can claim for damaged items caused by the alleged power surge. However, each claim will be investigated to determine what caused the surge. City Power’s insurance brokers will then respond to each claim based on the results of the investigation. With regards to the potholes, residents can claim vehicle damage where each claim lodged is referred together with the Johannesburg Roads Agency’s investigation report to the agency’s insurance brokers for further assessment and/or investigation.
