UPDATE: Councillors engage land invaders in Alexandra

ALEXANDRA – Councillors meet Eastbank land invaders.

On the morning of 15 June, Alex councillors led by Ward 105 councillor Teffo Rapadu engaged land invaders who suspended their attempt yesterday afternoon to construct shacks along Vincent Tshabalala Road in East Bank.

The group agreed to suspend their intent after the promised meeting.

Rapadu said the meeting was aimed at seeking a permanent, legal and safe solution. “While their housing problems are valid, they can’t be let to take the law into their own hands. We are looking for an amicable and legal solution for them,” Rapadu said, adding that many of them understood the importance of acting within the law.

“A few are argumentative, appear drunk and want to be destructive. We will not allow the process to degenerate and if necessary, we will urge the police to take necessary corrective action.”

He said the optimal solution would prioritise those already in the housing waiting list. Some of the land invaders, he said, were from those who were allocated rooms for rent in back rooms in RDP houses.
