Sibusiso Mdlalose (37) of Tembisa, admitted to the offence after the gun with its serial numbers filed off was found in a VW Golf 4 he was driving on 14 November last year. The vehicle was said to belong to his wife or fiance who was apparently employed by the police services.

At the initial stage of the case reported in the Alex News earlier this year, the accused had denied the charge. He was sentenced to 10 years wholly suspended for five for the possession of the gun and for five years for the possession of five bullets which was suspended for three years.

The accused and two others, who were not found guilty, were stopped by the police at a roadblock in Woodmead. The police became suspicious when the three men could not tell the officers where they were headed. The vehicle was searched and the loaded gun was found in the cubby hole.

The men were arrested after they claimed no knowledge of the gun. They were detained and granted bail of R1 000. The gun was confiscated and sent for forensic testing to determine if it was used to commit other crimes.
