Police find stolen goods in butchery

ALEXANDRA – Butcher arrested for alleged possession of stolen food and other items.

The owner of a butchery in the Wynberg business precinct was arrested by the Alex police on 17 May for the alleged possession of cheese stolen from a hijacked truck earlier that day.

Police spokesperson Captain Allie Kodisang said after the truck was reported as hijacked, it was found dumped and empty in Diepsloot.

Kodisang said the butchery was raided by the police after the truck’s tracking system identified the shop as the place of delivery. Cheese valued at approximately R200 000, as well as other items, including bottles of deodorant, which were also in the truck, were found in the butchery.

The truck driver, who was from a Pick n Pay depot in Riverpark, said he was on duty to deliver the cheese and other food items to a shop in Longmeadow when three armed men hijacked the truck at a robot on Vincent Tshabalala Road, as it headed to the N3 Freeway.

Some of the suspected stolen items found in the Wynberg butchery.

After the hijackers forced him out of the truck and drove off, he reported the incident to the police and his employers.

Kodisang commended the speedy arrest and recovery of the truck. He urged businesses to operate ethically and warned them not to be a market for stolen goods. He said hijackings and robberies should be discouraged.

“Dealing in stolen goods is unfair and is a deceptive business practice. It impacts the national economy, other business competitors, the public at large and also endangers innocent lives when vehicles are hijacked,” he said.
