Man held for attempted arson at ex-lover’s home

ALEXANDRA - Neighbours apprehend a fleeing suspect after he allegedly tried to set his ex-girlfriend's house on fire.

 

A suspect was apprehended by members of the public and handed over to the Alex police after he allegedly tried to set the 12th Avenue home of his ex-lover on fire.

The spokesperson for Alex Police Station, Captain Allie Kodisang confirmed the incident which occurred at 11pm on 6 May. He said the victim allegedly heard the suspect’s voice outside her house, warning a neighbour not to enter the place. Afterwards, the power went off and she allegedly smelled petrol in the house.

She went out to check and found a 2 litre can that smelled of petrol at the door and saw the suspect running away. The victim screamed and neighbours chased and caught the suspect who was then handed over to the police.

The police investigation is continuing.
