Policeman accused of possessing an illegal firearm

ALEXANDRA – Lyttelton police employee's car found with a loaded illegal firearm.

A vehicle belonging to an employee of the Lyttelton Police Station, Centurion is at the centre of a court case involving an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

This emerged at the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court recently in the trial of three suspects who are denying the charge of possession of a firearm with serial numbers filed off and loaded with five bullets. They allegedly committed the crime on 14 November last year.

The court heard that the suspects – who are on R1 500 bail each and one of whom is said to be a fiancé of the vehicle owner – were stopped by police on patrol in Woodmead while driving in the vehicle.

The police found the loaded firearm under a seat of the vehicle but the suspects allegedly denied knowledge of it. In a statement by investigating officers presented to the court, the vehicle owner confirmed to its occasional use by the fiancé. The firearm was taken for forensic testing.
