Child rapist case postponed at Alex Magistrates Court

ALEXANDRA – Search for a translator delays child rapist's trial.

The trial of a former taxi driver, Thabo Dintinti who is accused of raping three underage girls, was postponed to 30 May by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court.

The accused admitted guilt to one of the cases, which occurred 23, 29 September and 1 October 2015. The crimes – reported several times in the Alex News – have been postponed several times in court with the last being 19 April.

The latest postponement was to allow the court to secure a Venda language translator for one of the accused’s arresting officers. The accused allegedly lured the then six, seven10-year-oldr old victims into his taxi pretending that he would take them to school. Instead, he drove to the Marlboro Cemetery next to Setswetla Informal Settlement where he allegedly raped them. He was caught by Metro police officers while allegedly raping one of the victims.

According to NPO Women and Men Against Child Abuse, one victim has already testified against him in camera, another victim’s mother testified on her behalf and, testimonies of the third victim and the two arresting officers are outstanding.

At most of the trial dates, children and women’s rights organisations and political parties demonstrated outside court against child sexual abuse crimes in Alex, which are reported often by this newspaper, including taxi-related rapes, which seem to occur frequently.
