A husband in Alexandra allegedly pours petrol over his wife and attempts to set her alight

ALEXANDRA – Neigbours save petrol-drenched woman from burning.

An Alex man allegedly poured petrol over his wife and was arrested for attempted murder.

The incident occurred at 10pm on 1 April as the victim slept in their 15th Avenue residence.

Spokesperson for Alex Police Station, Captain Allie Kodisang said the victim was woken by liquid she thought was paraffin flowing over her body and saw her husband next to her holding a 5l can of petrol.

The suspect allegedly grabbed her hand and poured more liquid on her which she recognised as petrol. Afterwards, he searched his pocket, presumably for matches, and when he couldn’t find any, dragged her by the hand towards the television cabinet where he kept matches.

The victim shouted to her children to get out of the house.

Neighbours alerted by the commotion intervened, saving her from possible burning.

The suspect was arrested and an investigation will determine if and when the suspect will appear in court.
