JOBURG – Farewell tributes to Kathrada at his funeral

Many were gathered to bid farewell to Ahmed Kathrada when he was laid to rest this morning.

The guest speakers all delivered moving tributes to the gentle giant of the struggle.

Moulana Bham was in attendance and shared his sentiments on the kind man that was Kathrada.

Archbishop Thabo Makgoba spoke on behalf of the Christian community. He said Kathrada’s rainbow had three colours – dignity, opportunity and equality. Before closing off, Archbishop Mkgoba told Barbara Kathrada and his family and all those who mourn to not despair but celebrate his life.

Guru Jay Naidoo was representing the Hindu community and, for the Jewish community, Rabbi Sa’ar was the last of the religious speakers to take to the podium.

The Premier of Gauteng, David Makhura also got the opportunity to address those in attendance. He closed off with the words, “Farewell Uncle Kathy. The struggle continues.”

The nephew of Kathrada, Nazir, took to the podium and delivered a very emotional address.

Comrade Laloo Chiba, who was mentored by Kathrada and was a very close friend, also got an opportunity to bid farewell. “Should we ever meet again, the joyous reunion will be a magnificent gift to both us,” he said.

Sophia Williams-de Bruyn took to the stage and received loud applause. She recalled their first encounter and went on to highlight the instrumental role Kathrada played in the struggle, the Women’s March.

Blade Nzimande and Gwede Mantashe also had a chance to speak.

Former President, Kgalema Motlanthe delivered the eulogy.
