Homes of Alex cops raided by burglars, police uniforms stolen

ALEXANDRA – Police officers recover some personal work items stolen in burglaries at their homes.

Police officers lost uniforms and work-related items in two incidents of housebreaking and theft.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Allie Kodisang said some of the items were recovered and two suspects were arrested in connection with one of the crimes.

In the first incident, two officers lost their work uniforms and a private vehicle after intruders broke into an officer’s 16th Avenue home at night on 2 March. Before he went to sleep, the victim parked a Toyota Conquest motor vehicle in the driveway and ensured that it was locked and all windows were closed, said Kodisang.

When he woke up the following morning, the vehicle, with an estimated value of R42 000, had vanished. In it were his and a colleague’s police vests. The vehicle and items haven’t been recovered yet.

In the second incident which occurred at 4 am on 4 March, Kodisang said two suspects were arrested after residents apprehended and allegedly beat them before handing them over to the police. The suspects allegedly burgled a Far Eastbank home of a police officer who also had left it secured when he went on night duty.

The victim’s mother informed him about the crime. When he got home the two suspects were lying on the ground with their hands tied up. His room was messed up, a door had been broken and a crowbar, suspected to have been used to break in, was found on the scene.

Residents informed him that they caught the suspects carrying a bag, while they were trying to escape over a wall.

In the bag were two blue police shirts, a pair of blue police trousers, police pepper spray, a police beret, two pairs of blue jeans, and two pairs of Puma and Nike takkies which the victim identified as his. R3 000 in cash was also missing from the room.

The suspects will appear in court soon.
