LISTEN: Message calling on foreigners to retaliate if attacked in SA

Johannesburg – Local residents warned of possible anti-foreigner protest spreading to the city.

An anti-foreigners march has been approved by the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD), and will take place in Pretoria today.
This comes after concerned Mamelodi residents applied for permission to march to the Department of Home Affairs in Marabastad against illegal immigrants.
Mayoral spokesperson Samkelo Mgobozi said despite growing fears of violence, there was nothing strange about the TMPD giving permission for the march.

He said the permission came with strict conditions. “We are a democratic country. People are allowed to voice their concerns, as long as they do it within the confines of the law,” said Mgobozi.

He said police would be deployed to ensure no violence erupted. Protesters from various parts of Tshwane are expected to meet at the old Putco bus depot at 11am in Marabastad. From there they will head to the Department of Home Affairs.
Residents have been warned of the possibility of xenophobic protests spreading to Johannesburg.

The Sandton Chronicle is in possession of an audio clip that has been making the rounds on social media. In the clip, an unidentified man calls upon all Nigerians and other foreign nationals living in South Africa to resort to violence if they have to.
“We will give them war and we will give them hell. We will see that they end up in the ground,” said the man. He continues to request that the message is spread on social media.

According to the Daily Maverick, around 1 000 people are expected to gather. The organisers have emphasised that they are not targeting foreigners but the South African government’s controls over immigration.
These protests come in the wake of recent attacks on foreigners in Rosettenville and in Pretoria West, where shops were looted and violent acts were reportedly committed against foreign nationals.
