Woman jailed for selling car-jamming devices

ALEXANDRA – Nombali Nzimande sold the devices from a shop in Midrand

A woman was sentenced to 24 months in prison, with the option of a R5 000 fine, in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court for possession of jamming devices.

A licence is required to own or sell jamming devices, which are often used by thieves to tamper with motor vehicle central locking and alarm systems.

Acting on a tip-off, police arrested Nombali Nzimande, who is in her 30s, in 2014 for selling the gadgets from a shop in Midrand. Seventeen jamming devices were confiscated. In mitigation of sentence, the accused, who was out on bail, testified that she had not known the gadgets were prohibited in South Africa when she imported them from China.
