Female fraudster gets four-year jail term

ALEXANDRA – The woman opened a fictitious bank account and defrauded her employer of R950 000.

A former construction company employee who defrauded her employer last year was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court.

Irene Wood (57), who worked for the Sandton company’s human resources and finance department, pleaded guilty to fraud amounting to R950 000, half of which was recovered.
Wood opened a fictitious account in the company’s name and instructed a client to make deposits into the bank account. She withdrew half of the amount in several tranches for her own use.

The fraud was discovered by the company’s managers and she was fired.
