Australian journalist robbed in Alex

ALEXANDRA – Swift police reaction leads to recovery of journalist's video camera and arrest of two suspects.

A journalist was robbed of his video camera in Alex by two suspects who were later found by police hiding in a shack.

The journalist, who is apparently from Australia, had just set up his equipment on the corner of 13th Avenue and Alfred Nzo Avenue and was preparing to shoot a documentary when the two allegedly snatched his camera.

The recovered illegal gun and the camera belonging to a foreign journalist.

Alexandra Police Station spokesperson Lieutenant Allie Kodisang said the incident was seen by the victim’s companions, a female colleague and a tour guide, as well as two patrolling policemen. Constable Bongani Mbalati and Sergeant Steps Londoni, together with the victim, gave chase.

Mbalati said the fleeing suspects disappeared into a shack and one of them unsuccessfully tried to hide the camera. Both suspects were arrested and a gun with filed-off serial numbers, suspected to have been used in the robbery, was found on one of them.

The suspects were detained at Alex Police Station and are due to appear in court soon. Alex News will provide more details as the story unfolds.
