Cable thieves continue to play havoc with Alex

ALEXANDRA – Schooling was a nightmare for Alex pupils as a power outage forced them to do without electricity.

Pupils of Emfundisweni Primary School did not get the opportunity to enjoy their newly donated technological toys in the form of iPads for their literacy and numeracy skills programme.

This was due to a power failure at the school and surrounding houses, stretching from 12th Avenue right up to 1st Avenue in Alexandra.

School principal, Thembi Giyama said the power outage was believed to have been caused by cable thieves who steal power lines to sell the cables to scrap metal dealers. Giyama said she expected the power to be restored to the school and the surrounding community, as technicians from City Power were already working hard to fix the problem.

Last week, the City of Johannesburg urged residents to be vigilant against cable thieves who were plunging the township back to the old, dark city days as Alex was known during the time when it was not yet connected to the power grid.

Meanwhile, the school is expecting some high-profile visitors from the Read Trust on 20 February, who are expected to include, among them, some international visitors from Switzerland.
