60 years on and stronger than ever

WAVERLEY– The secret to a long and happy 60-year marriage revealed.

Love can last and the Levy’s have proved just that because on 17 February Ronnie and Leigh Levy will be celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary.

In 1957, this wonderful couple united in marriage and 60 years later they will be celebrating their diamond anniversary at the Waverley Sports Club with 70 of their dearest friends and family.

“We met at a party but both of us were seeing other people but I suggested we go for a coffee and get to know each other better,” said Ronnie. “I was staying in Bloemfontein at the time and after our first date I then travelled to Johannesburg every weekend to spend time with her for three weekends straight and by the fourth weekend I asked her to be my wife.”

The rest, as they say, is history.

With four daughters, 10 grandchildren and one soon-to-be great-grandchild, the Levy’s have achieved what most can only dream of. “We’ve been through a lot, with my cancer and Ron’s heart attack, we’ve had our ups and downs but thankfully we’ve had more ups and have overcome it all together,” said Leigh.

“We come from a generation of making it work and divorce was never mentioned in our household. It is sad to see the youth of today who give up so quickly. You can’t foretell what will happen in five years’ time but we are proud of where we are today as most couples do not get to this milestone,” said Ronnie.

When asked what the secret to their long and happy marriage was, they both said, “Respect each other, understand each other and don’t be selfish. Communication is extremely important and so is laughter and of course a bit of luck. We understand that we both got very lucky but we also worked really hard for this.” Congratulations to the Levy’s on their 60th anniversary.
