JOHANNESBURG – Educating the South African youth about financial marketing and investing.

This year’s Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) Investment Challenge will allow those attending high school and university to participate in the country’s largest financial literacy initiative.

The challenge, now in its 44th year, aims to educate the South African youth about financial marketing and investing.

The challenge allows youngsters to buy shares in a virtual portfolio and practice risk-free trading. Ralph Speirs, Corporate Social Investment officer at JSE said, “The challenge consists of two sections including the Schools Challenge and the University Challenge. Participants for the Schools Challenge are required to group themselves into teams made up of four. For the University Challenge, teams can vary from two to four students.”

In the University Challenge, first place winners receive R25 000, as well as an all-expenses paid trip to an international stock exchange. Second place winners receive R20 000 and third place receives R15 000.

In the Schools Challenge, the winning team is awarded monthly. The best performing team receives R2 000, as well as R500 for the teacher and R500 for the school. The top three portfolios, which are awarded at the annual award ceremony later in the year, are valued at R180 000.

“Registrations for the 2017 challenge are now open. The JSE invites the youth of South Africa to get in the game and increase their investment knowledge, while also standing a chance to win some great prizes,” said Speirs.
