Damning findings against Health MEC

JOBURG – Health ombudsman, Prof. Malegapuru Makgoba releases report on Life Esidimeni tragedy when 94 mentally ill patients died.

The much-awaited report on deaths surrounding psychiatric patients who died after being transferred from healthcare facility, Life Esidimeni has been released.

The health ombudsman, Professor Malegapuru Makgoba released the report on 1 February. Presenting the findings and recommendations, the ombudsman revealed that 94 patients died, which is way above the 37 deaths that were initially reported by Health MEC, Qedani Mahlangu.

The report has damning findings and recommendations against Mahlangu together with top officials within the health department.

“The Premier [David Makhura] must consider the suitability of MEC Mahlangu to continue in her current role,” Makgoba said. He also recommended that disciplinary action is taken against the health department’s head of department and director, adding that they must both be reported to the health council.

According to Makgoba, the decision to terminate the contract with Life Esidimeni was taken at a high level, and hastily. “The health department moved patients in a hurry and with chaotic execution,” he said.

Makgoba also stated that several human rights violations also took place, with a series of close to 15 cases of negligence and reckless decisions taken.

This is a developing story, more details to follow.
