Knitting for the needy

SANDTON – A charity group needs the help of the community to continue their good work.

The KnitWits are in desperate need of help from the community.

Greta Collier of KnitWits said, “Our knitting and crochet group meet every Saturday morning in the beautiful staff room at Rosebank Union Church, on the corner of William Nicol Drive and St Andrews Road in Hurlingham, Sandton, creating blankets and items of clothing for the destitute and needy folk.”

The KinitWits were involved in Nelson Mandela Day festivities that saw the community donate blankets to the needy.

She explained that the group knits and crochets for the Rosebank Union Church’s social ministries charity called Rays of Hope. This charity is aimed at aiding the poor and the needy in Alexandra and a lot of blankets and clothing items are distributed to those in need.

“Many donations and blankets were given to the flood victims in Alex [by Rays of Hope] due to them losing all their belongings.”

She added that the group also crochets and knits blankets for Carolyn Steyn’s 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day. “This project distributed about 27 000 blankets to many destitute individuals, schools, nursery schools, retirement villages in the rural areas, and many, many organisations who are so desperately in need of our assistance.”

This year, the KnitWits will attempt to break a world record by producing a portrait blanket of Nelson Mandela measuring more than 4 000m². This will be supported by many national and international crocheting and knitting groups.

Residents can help by donating double knit wool so that the group can continue knitting and crocheting for the destitute and needy people in the area.

All donations can be dropped off at the office at Rosehaven Retirement Village on the corner of William Nicol Drive and St Andrews Road, or across the road at the Rosebank Union Church.
