CJC activities are back to normal

ALEXANDRA - Things are back to normal again at the Alex campus of the Central Johannesburg College.

Learning and the registration of new students are back to normal at the Alex Campus of the Central Johannesburg College.

This follows protests that erupted at the college campus last week when management was said to have unilaterally moved many of the courses at the college to the Ellis Park campus without prior consultation with the students and the community of Alexandra.

The moving of the course to the Ellis Park campus had also left a number of teachers without anything to do and fears were rife that they could possibly lose their jobs in the process.

The affected academic staff was said to have joined the students in the protests that saw the closure of the campus and failure to take registrations of prospective new students for this academic year.

Siphokazi Mpahlwana of the Youth Advisory Centre in 8th Avenue, who has been championing the issues at the college, said the college had agreed to return all the courses that had been taken to Ellis Park, which means the jobs of the academic staff were now secure as well.

“They also assured us and the community of Alexandra that they were not going to close down the college as we feared,” Mpahlwana said, adding that they were due to hold a meeting with college management later this week to finalise all the issues.

Asked what course of action they were going to take if the meeting later in the week did not yield the desired results, Mpahlwana said management had shown a willingness to meet the demands of the students by returning the courses and added, “We are hopeful they would not renege on their promise.

“If they renege on their undertaking, then we’re back to square one and they can expect the wrath of the students to be unleashed on them once again.”
