Failed matrics have hope

JOHANNESBURG – Failed matrics have a second chance to better their results and obtain a National Senior Certificate (NSC).

With many 2016 matriculants failing to acquire their National Senior Certificate (NSC), the Basic Education Department’s media liason, Elijah Mhlanga said 27.5 per cent still have a chance with the specially designed Second Chance Matric Support Programme.

The programme aims to assist students who were not able to meet the NSC or the extended Senior Certificate (SC), according to Mhlanga.

More than 800 000 pupils wrote the exams last year, making the Class of 2016 the largest matric group in South African history to write for their NSC. However, only 150 000 obtained a bachelor’s pass for university entry and 18 schools, nationwide, had a zero per cent pass rate.

Mhlanga added, “Learners who would like to take advantage of this opportunity to complete their school-leaving qualification should contact their nearest Education District Office before 15 March to register to write the November 2017 examinations.”

The NSC rewrite is available for all 2016 matriculants who wish to improve their results in certain subjects, or who have failed. The rewrite can be tailored to suit any lifestyle with access to study resources, teachers and personal attention for better results.

Pupils wanting to attempt to improve their results or repeat their final year can do so through private education institutions, FET and TVET colleges that offer correspondence learning.

Damelin Correspondence College (DCC) not only offers a second attempt at matric but also the opportunity to earn an income as well. They also offer the Senior Certificate Revised for matriculants of any year who wish to finish their secondary education. According to Lucy-ann Rouessart, PR and events coordinator of Damelin, “[The] failure statistics are quite high. Many matriculants are unaware of other options to assist them to either rewrite or redo their matric. There is a solution. “Completing matric is vital in today’s job market and will give you access to a world of opportunities. With over 40 years experience in helping students with employment, DCC has become reputable as an education provider.”

The general manager of DCC, Ajanth Choudree said, “Every year there is a large majority of matrics who look to study further but, sadly, are turned away from universities on the basis of a lack of space or they simply fail to meet basic entry requirements. However, we at Damelin Correspondence College welcome all those looking to advance their schooling career as well as develop and fine tune necessary skills needed to make their dream job a reality.”

Registration closes on 15 March.
