You lucky dogs!

JOBURG – A group of friends have made rescuing neglected bulldogs and placing them in safe homes their mission in life.

After rescuing George and Lola the bulldogs in May 2015, Jolanda Voster, Chantel van der Merwe and Lenell Hattingh felt so fulfilled they decided to start, together with Alex Long, the Bulldog Rescue Angels (Bra) in June the following year. Maryka Lubbe joined Bra shortly thereafter.

The Gauteng-based bulldog rescuers place happy and healthy bulldogs in safe, secure homes. They educate prospective owners about these wonderful breeds, discourage unethical breeding, and help people to understand English, French and American bulldogs and their specific needs. They make sure the dogs are treated for the many conditions which they are susceptible to, and this is reliant on donations from caring members of the public.

“We rely heavily on donations from our supporters, proceeds from the sale of our products, and our fundraising events, all of which go towards covering all of our costs. We also rely on our fabulous foster homes to assist in the re-homing process while the bulldog waits for the perfect home,” said Hattingh.

The Bra members, none of whom are qualified to rescue neglected dogs, care for them and assist in the relocation and adoption process. “We have a strict adoption policy and ensure that the right home is always found, regardless of how long that may take. Johannesburg and Pretoria are the main areas where our rescuees are cared for. The majority of the dogs come from Johannesburg and are housed in Gauteng.”

Last year Bra raised money by recruiting members and participating in the Telkom 94.7 Cycle Challenge, and other forms of donations from dog lovers are always welcome.

“We appreciate assistance from people who would like to donate their time to assist us with home checks, picking up dogs from the airport, collection from vets, as well as providing assistance at our fundraising events,” she said.
