NYDA salutes Class of 2016

JOBURG — Youth agency supports failed matrics who don't give up.

The National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) has praised the 2016 matrics for their outstanding results in the final exams.

Chief executive officer, Khathu Ramukumba said, “As the NYDA, we commend the matric Class of 2016 for achieving an overall national pass rate of 72.5 per cent in the 2016 National Senior Certificate examination, from a previous figure of [70.7] per cent. Furthermore, we commend the Department of Basic Education for recording the highest enrolment of Grade 12 pupils in the history of the basic education system in South Africa.”

In reference to the increased pass rate in maths and physical science, Ramukumba said, “This will indeed enhance the study of programmes focused on scarce skills required by the economy.” The agency, in partnership with the Education, Training and Development Practices Seta, released the Second Chance Matric Programme results on 5 November. The programme gives pupils who fail matric or wish to upgrade marks a chance to rewrite exams.

The programme’s 2015 top performing pupil, Lwandile Mdiniso, achieved an 84 per cent average after rewriting maths and life sciences. He is studying towards a BSc in computer science. Lakin Sadie Seconds, one of last year’s top achievers who upgraded her maths, life sciences and physical science marks, will pursue a career in medicine.

“These are just two of the many stories of how some of the learners on the programme managed to turn their grades around and go on to achieve great things at university level. We hope these examples will serve as an inspiration for the many young people who might be losing hope because they failed matric,” Ramukumba said.
