114 babies born on Christmas day

Gauteng – More than 100 children born on Christmas day in the province.

Gauteng Health MEC’s Qedani Mahlangu’s office has released the number of children born on Christmas day in the province’s hospitals.

The arrival of a new baby is the beginning of joy for most families, read their statement. 114 babies were born in the hospitals, 49 girls and 65 boys.

“There can be nothing as fulfilling than bringing a new life on this earth, we wish them a long and healthy life and remember to take good care of your babies and ensure that they receive the necessary immunizations available for free at all public health facilities to prevent ailments affecting mostly children,” said Mahlangu.

Shea also called  upon parents to ensure the safety of their children during this busy time of the year.  She said incidents such as drowning in swimming pools, missing in shopping malls and sexual abuse is on the rise during the festive season.

The MEC also took the opportunity to thank all the staff across the province for ensuring that the delivery of quality healthcare in the province is maintained during the festive season especially on public holidays. “I really appreciate the efforts of all healthcare workers during this festive period, while others are home resting, they are hard at work.

The top three hospitals delivered 45 babies on 25 December.

1. Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital had 25 deliveries (13 girls and 12 boys).  With one set of twins.

2. Tembisa Tertiary Hospital  delivered 11 babies (three  girls and eight boys).

3. Kalafong Tertiary Hospital delivered nine babies.  Three girls and six boys.

Other hospitals account for seven or less babies in each hospital.
