Fugitive bust, sentenced for more crimes

ALEXANDRA - Fugitive from 25-year sentence, nabbed in stolen car, with bullets.

A fugitive who was arrested for crimes committed while on the run from a 25-year jail term meted on him by the High Court in Palm Ridge earlier this year was sentenced by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court to six years imprisonment.

The sentence for the illegal possession of ammunition and reported stolen motor vehicle will run concurrently with the 25-year sentence pending an additional charge still expected for his escape.

Kagiso Ledwaba (33) of Atteridgeville was arrested on 10 November this year with three other suspects in the Sandton area while driving in two different vehicles. Police stopped and searched their vehicles.

The one vehicle with his two accomplices inside, was found loaded with prohibited firearms. The other vehicle, a Ford Focus he was driving and claimed to be his, was found to have been reported as stolen. In it, police found three rounds of live ammunition. He admitted his guilt on both counts and now awaits further sentencing for escaping from custody.

His accomplices are still to appear in court after the investigation is completed on charges of possessing illegal firearms and the status of their vehicle.
