French school holds rugby coaching clinics in Alex

ALEXANDRA – French school partners with Alex Rugby Club to build a girls' team in the sport.

A French international school based in Morningside, Lycée Jules Verne holds rugby coaching clinics at Alexandra Rugby Club.

The school conducts these clinics every Monday from 3pm to 5pm and said it was their intention to contribute towards the development of the game of rugby in South Africa, especially female rugby.

One of the coordinators, Emmanule Selles said they were happy to have found a local rugby club that they could work with to promote the sport of rugby in the township, and also share their knowledge and skills.

“We have decided to work with Alexandra Rugby Club as it is much closer to where we are based,” he said. “One of the major challenges in South African rugby is that they are quite a few girls who play the game and our involvement is to try and change this and offer more opportunities to the development of female rugby.”

Selles added that they have many girls who play rugby at the school and they would also like them to get a chance to play with various rugby teams across the province, including teams in Alexandra, hence ‘we’re building a girls rugby team here for that purpose too’.

The president of Alexandra Rugby Club, Elias Mpengu welcomed the school’s involvement and said it would encourage players and those who would like to play rugby to participate when they see that ‘we have a good relationship with an international school’.

“We all know that through sport a lot can be achieved, and we really appreciate it when we get people who are not South Africans willing to invest in the sporting future of this country. I am looking forward to work with Lycée Jules Verne and I know that there is a lot that we stand to learn from them,” Mpengu said.
