Health workers honored at Khanyisa Health Aawards

MIDRAND - Hospitals and health care workers were honored for their excellence at the Khanyisa Health Awards held at the Gallagher Convention Centre on November 18.

Gauteng Premier David Makhura and MEC for Gauteng Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu honored hospitals and health workers during the Khanyisa Health Awards held at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand on November 18.

Although two of the nominated local healthcare facilities did not make it, Makhura said he would like to thank all health professionals for contributing in the turnaround of the department and encouraged them to work harder to address the challenges still faced in clinics and hospitals. Tembisa Tertiary Hospital and Ethafeni Clinic were nominated for the Most Efficient Healthcare Facilities. However, both did not win.

Makhura added that he was proud that the department received an unqualified audit report in 2016, for the first time in two years. He said the turnaround of the department was crucial following negative media reports, shortage of beds, food and medication in hospitals.

“As part of the turnaround, the department needed to perform above national average, improve delivery of quality health care and reduce the waiting period for patients because that could be a matter… [of] life and death,” he said.

Mahlangu also encouraged health professionals to continue to work hard. “We want to give appreciation to health workers for their selfless contribution despite challenges faced. Continue doing good work, with your efforts, the department could only get better.”
