Crèche operators get upskilled

ALEXANDRA – Crèches get exposed to the trade's requirements.

Alex crèches were exposed to aspects of the National Qualifications Framework relating to their work.

This was at a recent workshop that sought to improve their operations and efficiency when working with children up to four years old.

The four-day workshop at Altrec Sports Complex was facilitated by the Joburg East District’s Department of Education. It formed part of a rollout programme already conducted for others at Ikage Primary and Sandtonview Secondary schools and was attended by 62 crèche operators.

The department’s Rosemary Ndawonde said the initiative will continue into next year to cater for and improve many crèches’ understanding and adherence to the curriculum guidance requirements. “It will instil in them a paradigm shift to enhance their efficiency and expose them to a range of support agencies and resources, Ndawonde said. She added that the training would also help creches develop a conducive environment for working with and loving children so that they become better citizens in the future.”

The participants worked in groups, sharing and learning from their experiences, and challenges which were discussed and solutions made in plenary sessions.

Ndawonde said training would, over time, be accredited and the participants issued with certificates of competency.
