EXCLUSIVE: Dlamini speaks from behind bars

CLEVELAND – Former Wits SRC president Mcebo Dlamini speaks about his court case from behind bars at the Cleveland police station holding cells.

Former Wits SRC president Mcebo Dlamini cut a lonely figure as he stood behind a metal door inside the holding cells at the Cleveland police station.

He disputed the allegations that he was a threat to society, reiterating once more that he was not a violent person.

“I have never pulled anyone out of class, that is something no one can say they saw me doing,” he stated.

“More than anything I believe that the reason for my arrest is political, as the prosecution in my case has no grounds for opposing the bail,” he added.

He pointed out that the prosecutor was dwelling on his age which he confirmed as 29.

“It does not change that this is Mcebo whether they add 40 years or a 100 years, my identity does not change,” he said.

He explained that Home Affairs had previously made a mistake on his documents, a mistake that has since been rectified. He also confirmed that he was a South African citizen.

He refuted claims that it was him who had thrown a stone at the police van, stating that a lot of people had the 1976 T-shirt that he also owns.

“Student leaders in the #FeesMustFall protest have been singled out just like the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal SRC president who remains in prison and will only appear in court on 2 December,” he added.

However, he would not answer questions directed at his personal life adding that it was better for his personal information not to be known.

Despite the coldness of the holding cell, Dlamini said that he was alright and had high hopes that he would be granted bail.
