Motorist assaults and bribes policemen

ALEXANDRA – Motorist on cop assault and bribe charge awaits court.

An Alex motorist remanded in police custody for allegedly assaulting and offering a bribe to a Metro Police officer will appear in court once the police investigation is finalised.

The incident happened at about 7.30am on 8 September at the intersection of 2nd and Watt streets, Wynberg, near the Pan Africa Mall. Alex police spokesperson, Captain Allie Kodisang said an officer on duty on 2nd Street waved down the suspect in a Toyota Avanza, which was assumed to be a taxi, but the suspect didn’t stop.

Another officer – who was at the intersection and saw the motorist disobey the first officer – stopped him when he reached the intersection. The officer checked the car and found it to be without vehicle registration and taxi-operating discs. The suspect also failed to produced a driver’s licence. When the officer produced the ticket book, the suspect grabbed the book away from the officer, before assaulting the officer, who was assisted by a colleague to effect an arrest. The suspect was searched and found in possession of a knife. The suspect allegedly tried to bribe the officers with R90 when he was being processed for detention at the Alex Police Station.
