MC Weiler sends strong message in bid to defend title

ALEXANDRA – MC Weiler fire first salvo of its intentions to retain the Discovery Alex Schools U12 League title.

MC Weiler has sent a strong signal of their intention to defend their title of the Discovery Alex Schools U12 League when they beat favourites Iphutheng 2–0 at the No 3 Square Grounds.

A goal in each half of the game by their skipper Tumelo Pokwane, who plies his trade at Sandton Park FC, saw the defending champions collecting maximum points to oust log leaders, Iphutheng.

Two-time champions Iphutheng were not lambs to the slaughter as they battled to get back into the game with their strikers creating many opportunities but firing blanks. Iphutheng’s diminutive Super Stars FC player, Ngwato Segobela, came close to scoring on numerous occasions.

Iphutheng now trail the defending champions by a single point and anything can happen in the fifth and last round of the competition before the top two teams in each of the two groups proceed to the semi-finals on 19 October.

The two-time champions are now tied on nine points with another perennial powerhouse of Alex primary schools football, Dr Knak, which Iphutheng beat by a solitary goal from hard-working Pontsho Makgethwa in the opening games.

In the final games on 12 October, Iphutheng has an easy game against Ithute which should see them collect maximum points and possibly return to the top of the table and a possible game against Group 2 team, Zenzeleni.

MC Weiler has a tough last game of the group stage against high-riding Dr Knak, who are also determined to reach the semis after they beat Ikage 2–1 in their fourth game.

The two schools were the finalists in last year’s tournament and MC Weiler got the better of Dr Knak, but anything can happen this time around as Dr Knak will not want to be beaten twice by the newly emerged powerhouse of Alex schools football.

A draw between these two giants could pave the way for Iphutheng to mount the summit once again, that is if they win their last match; while a win by Dr Knak could signal the end of MC Weiler in the tournament, that is if Iphutheng win their last game.
