Friend saves victim from necklacing by robbers

ALEXANDRA - Friend saves assaulted victim from necklacing by robbers.

A man was saved by a friend from robbers who placed a tyre around his neck, probably with the intention to set him alight, after they had taken his cellphone and money.

According to Alex police spokesperson Captain Allie Kodisang, the 25-year-old victim of 13th Avenue was allegedly attacked at about 11.30pm on 9 September at his home by four known and wanted suspects. The suspects allegedly forced themselves into his room and instructed him to give them a cellphone, which they claimed someone dressed like him had taken from them.

Despite his plea of innocence, they allegedly dragged him to 16th Avenue where they beat him and threw a brick at him, injuring his leg, before taking his cellphone and R500 in cash.

Just as they were putting a tyre around his neck, a friend of his came by and the victim told him of the items taken by the suspects. The friend called the victim’s phone and when it rang on one of the suspects, they ran away.

They are wanted for robbery and assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm and alternatively attempted murder.
